Dr Patrick Kehoe
Dr Patrick Kehoe, native of Carrick-on-Suir, leads one of the largest dementia research teams in the UK and since he started at the University of Bristol has secured over £10m worth of research funding. He is internationally recognised as a pioneering name in the molecular mechanisms linking high blood pressure and the development and potential treatment of Alzheimer's disease. He has published over 100 scientific papers to date.
Dr. Kehoe's main research interest for over a decade is that of mechanisms which underlie the long acknowledged, but still poorly understood, association between hypertension and blood pressure regulation in general and the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other dementias. Of particular interest to Dr. Kehoe is the role of the renin angiotensin system in the pathology of AD, which has properties that echo with his two key research priorities. This work has served as a template against which much of his other research into neprilysin, insulin-degrading enzyme and endothelin-converting enzymes have evolved and expanded.
Dr. Kehoe's other areas of interest include the aetiology of various forms of Vascular Cognitive Impairment (VCI). Dr. Kehoe's research endevours to identify genetic risk factors for VCI but also engages in research to harmonise the conceptualisation and classification of different forms of VCI.
